Shifter Installation

 

If you’d prefer to use a handlebar mounted clutch lever then down below where the old clutch mechanism used to reside, you’ll have a foot shifter assembly. The foot shifter was first offered in 1952,

The picture above shows a standard stock factory shifter assembly installed on the frame. Not too much to these units so no installation instructions are really needed but most makers supply an exploded parts diagram which might be helpful.

 Custom made controls mount and function almost identically but look prettier and cost a lot more. I’ve only got two of the mounting bolts in the backing plate because this was a quick setup just for the Pic. Most major component in shifter kits are pretty heavy duty but the shift linkage and connectors are usually junk and in this depart

Most major component in shifter kits are pretty heavy duty but the shift linkage and connectors are usually junk and in this department, we got some junk for sure. My grandmother would destroy these flimsy little rods and clevis connectors in about five minutes speed shifting on her way to the Bingo parlor. We’ll be changing these out once we get to the next phase of work.
