If you’d prefer to use a handlebar-mounted clutch lever, then down below where the old clutch mechanism used to reside, you’ll find a motorcycle foot shifter assembly. The foot shifter was first offered in 1952. The picture above shows a standard stock factory shifter installation on the frame. There’s not much to these units, so no detailed installation instructions are really needed; however, most manufacturers provide an exploded parts diagram that could be helpful for the clutch lever installation.

Custom made controls mount and function almost identically but look prettier and cost a lot more. I’ve only got two of the mounting bolts in the backing plate because this was a quick setup just for the Pic. Most major components in shifter kits, including the motorcycle foot shifter, are pretty heavy duty, but the shift linkage and connectors are usually junk. In this department, we got some junk for sure. My grandmother would destroy these flimsy little rods and clevis connectors in about five minutes speed shifting on her way to the Bingo parlor. After completing the clutch lever installation, we’ll be changing these out once we get to the next phase of shifter installation.
